Get the browser viewport dimensions with Javascript

I want to provide my visitors the ability to see images in high quality, is there any way I can detect the window size (or better yet, the viewport size - see green area ) of the browser with Javascript?

  1. jQuery dimension functions

    $(window).width() and $(window).height()

  2. If you aren't using jQuery, it gets ugly. Here's a snippet that should work on all new browsers. The behavior is different in Quirks mode and standards mode in IE. This takes care of it.

    var elem = (document.compatMode === "CSS1Compat") ?
    document.documentElement :
    document.body;

    var height = elem.clientHeight;
    var width = elem.clientWidth;

  3. You can use the window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight properties.

  4. See: responsejs.com/labs/dimensions/

    // pure JavaScript
    var viewportWidth = document.documentElement.clientWidth
    , viewportHeight = document.documentElement.clientHeight
    ;

    // jQuery
    var viewportWidth = $(window).width()
    , viewportHeight = $(window).height()
    ;

    // hybrid
    var viewportWidth = document.documentElement.clientWidth || $(window).width()
    , viewportHeight = document.documentElement.clientHeight || $(window).height()
    ;

Slow Android emulator

I have a 2.67 GHz Celeron processor, 1.21 GB of RAM on a x86 Windows XP Professional machine. My understanding is that the Android emulator should start fairly quickly on such a machine, but for me it does not. I have followed all instructions in setting up the IDE, SDKs, JDKs and such and have had some success in staring the emulator quickly but is very particulary. How can I, if possible, fix this problem?
