I think I'm leaning toward C# and .net as a concentration language for learning web development. I would like to learn good programming fundamentals and I've looked at pretty much everything else. The four I've narrowed it down to have been C#, Python, Ruby and PHP. Is there a reason to stay away from C# (and I don't think the cost issue would really apply to my solo-developer situation but I could be totally wrong). Any thoughts? I realize that these are all great languages so I'm not trying to ask which is the best overall. However, would Ruby be a viable alternative for a first language or does it have too much "magic under the hood" coupled with Rails, and unorthodox methodologies? I'm a Delphi developer on the Windows platform, recently read the PHP tutorial at W3CSchools, it looks interesting. We all know scripting languages are very good at web site development, but I also want to utilize it to improve my productivity or get some tedious tasks done quickly, maybe some quick-and-dirty string/file processing? What do you usually do with scripting languages apart from software development? And we need a responsive, decent IDE/editor in order to gain productivity when writing scripts for this purpose? Yet another LanguageX vs LanguageY question.... Currently I have a bunch of apps built on playframework . For the most part I love it. Moving from PHP a few years ago was almost a religious experience -- an actual functional orm, much less boiler plate code, stuff just worked, etc. I still have a website running on a a shared hosting service thats built with PHP+ CodeIgniter . Recently I've been adding some features to this site and have been thinking about porting it to either Ruby on Rails or Playframework. So far though, nothing about rails has really blown me away. It seems like it has pretty much the same featureset as playframework. I like ruby's terseness, and things like blocks, but again for the most part there's been nothing about the language itself that has made me go "oh wow this is 1000x better than java/php/c/whatever!" In fact, some parts actually kind of rub me the wrong way -- I prefer strongly-typed languages for example. My questio
